Description:
Op het middenluik zien we de heilige Anna, gezeten op een rijk versierde troon. Volgens de christelijke traditie huwde Anna driemaal. Haar echtgenoten bevinden zich aan haar linker- en rechterzijde. Uit haar verbintenis met Joachim kreeg zij een dochter Maria, de moeder van Jezus. Maria zit samen met haar Kind aan de voeten van haar moeder. Rechts zit Jozef, Maria’s man, met een bloeiende staf in de hand. Op de zijluiken zien we de dochters uit Anna’s beide andere huwelijken, samen met hun echtgenoten en kinderen. De verering van de heilige Anna bereikte rond 1500, vooral in de Nederlanden, een hoogtepunt. Haar wortels liggen echter veel dieper en gaan terug op de voorchristelijke vruchtbaarheidscultus en de verering van de Grote Moeder. Het drieluik wordt toegeschreven aan de Meester van de heilige Anna en is afkomstig uit het Sint-Aubertusbegijnhof (Poortakker) in Gent. De figuren zijn realistisch weergegeven. Archaïserend is echter het gebruik van goud, de vlakke achtergrond met rozenhaag en de naamaanduiding van de heiligen.
