- De lactatio van de heilige Bernardus van Clairvaux is vermoedelijk van de hand van een Gentse meester. Het verhaalt een van de talrijke anekdotes en legendes die rond de figuur van Bernardus (1090-1153) nog tijdens zijn leven en in de loop van de late middeleeuwen circuleren. Hier wordt de lactatio voorgesteld: Maria zou aan Bernardus, benedictijnermonnik, stichter en abt van de abdij van Clervaux, verschenen zijn en hem een straaltje moedermelk op de lippen hebben gespoten. De scène symboliseert de intieme relatie tussen Maria en de heilige, hier voorgesteld in een kapel van de cisterciënzerabdij van Sinaai, een halve eeuw voor de verwoesting ervan. De bank waarop Maria zit en een kussen in het koorgestoelte achter Bernardus dragen het familiewapen van de opdrachtgever, de zesentwintigste abt van de Baudelo-abdij van Sinaai, Jan van Deynse. Op zijn initiatief werd in Gent, tussen de Ottogracht en het Baudelohof, een nieuwe abdij als toevluchtsoord gebouwd.
