- Description:
- Naar het voorbeeld van Parijs en Rijsel organiseerde de Academie van Gent in 1792 haar eerste Salon en een wedstrijd met als thema een karakterkop. Ernest Joseph Bailly behaalde er de eerste prijs met deze kop van een man. Het gezicht is vertrokken in een grimas vol minachting. Karakterkoppen als deze passen in een traditie die terug gaat op Leonardo Da Vinci en Pieter Bruegel. Voor zijn uitbeelding van het thema Minachting van de haat inspireerde Bailly zich vermoedelijk op voorbeelden van de tekenaar-schilder Charles Le Brun en de beeldhouwer Franz Xaver Messerschmidt, twee kunstenaars die als het ware een inventaris van alle mogelijke gelaatsuitdrukkingen hebben samengesteld.
