Description:
De Calvarieberg van Maarten van Heemskerck is afkomstig uit het klooster der rijke klaren in Gent. Verscheidene elementen uit het Lijdensverhaal zijn hier in één tafereel samengebracht. Tussen de goede en de slechte moordenaar hangt de gekruisigde Christus, hoog verheven boven de massa. Een soldaat steekt een met azijn doordrenkte spons omhoog om Jezus’ dorst te lessen, een ander blikt met ontzag omhoog naar de stervende. Op de voorgrond rechts dobbelen soldaten om Jezus’ kleren. Links zien we de bezwijming van zijn moeder Maria in de armen van de apostel Johannes. Aan de voeten van het kruis kijkt Maria Magdalena door smart overmand naar de Messias op. De opdrachtgever, gekleed in het koorhemd van een priester, zit geknield onderaan links. Zijn identiteit is niet bekend. De virtuoos geschilderde paarden in de achtergrond gaan niet terug op natuurstudies, maar op schetsen die hij in Italië naar antieke voorbeelden maakte. Hij verbleef er van 1532 tot 1536.
