Description:

Het poëtische verhaal van de Annunciatie inspireerde tal van kunstenaars. Op het altaarstuk van de Gentse schilder Jan Janssens zien we Maria, geknield voor haar bidstoel. Daarop ligt het boek met de profetie van Jesaja geopend: ‘Een maagd is zwanger en zal een zoon baren.’ Terwijl de engel haar de boodschap brengt, daalt de Heilige Geest in de gedaante van een duif over Maria neer. De houding van Maria’s handen wijst op onderwerping en aanvaarding. De eenvoudige, sterk omlijnde vormen, theatrale lichteffecten en de voorkeur voor volkse types herinneren aan de stijl van Caravaggio en vooral van de Hollandse caravaggist Hendrik Terbrugghen. In zijn geboortestad en omgeving genoot Jan Janssens een zekere faam met religieuze taferelen als De doornenkroning en De Annunciatie, thema’s die hij meermaals hernam. Het hier getoonde altaarstuk is afkomstig uit het voormalige franciscanenklooster in Gent.
