- De sjees is een hoogtepunt in het oeuvre van Permeke. Het werk is geschilderd in de buurt van Jabbeke. Door te kiezen voor warme, contrasterende kleurtonen, is 'De Sjees' een uitschieter in zijn oeuvre in de jaren 1920. Permeke beeldde de welgezindheid op zondag uit. De vrolijke beweging van het paard brengt een ludieke ode aan het plattelandsleven.
