- Gedurende de Tweede Wereldoorlog schilderde Victor Servranckx (1897 - 1965) hoofdzakelijk conventionele landschappen. De reeks beschilderde tegeltjes (1943) vormt hier een uitzondering op. De vormentaal van de tegeltjes doet organisch, surrealistisch aan, wat lijkt op zijn stijl van de jaren 1927 - 1940. Servranckx die tegeltjes vervaardigt, is minder vreemd dan het op het eerste zicht kan doen vermoeden. Als aanhanger van de Gemeenschapskunst en de Zuivere Beelding zette hij zich in om via de architectuur, binnenhuisinrichting en toegepaste kunsten zijn artistieke principes te integreren in de sociale werkelijkheid.
