This anonymous portrait of an artist is probably a self-portrait. The artist poses with a pastel and painting stick in her hand next to the portrait of a young man. Based on her clothing this canvas has been dated towards the end of the eighteenth century or early nineteenth century. It is not clear where this work was created. Fashions, which were dictated in England and France at the time, were widely disseminated throughout Europe, with very few regional differences. The boy in the portrait has hair that curls down to his shoulders and wears a wide shirt and house cap. A staged still life at the bottom left of the canvas shows the artist’s pastel box, a bust and a simple fan.
