De artistieke en maatschappelijke betekenis van Frans Masereel is vooral te situeren tijdens en tussen de twee wereldoorlogen. Wegens zijn consequent pacifisme verbleef hij van 1914 tot 1918 als politiek vluchteling in het neutrale Genève. In zijn houtsneden leverde hij commentaar op de oorlog en ging hij meer en meer werken met scherpe lijnen en expressieve zwarte en witte vlakken. In Mon livre d’heures, zijn eerste beeldroman uit 1918–1919, laat hij een andere, meer optimistische kant van zichzelf zien. De 167 houtsneden grijpen enerzijds terug naar een eeuwenoude techniek en concept (de titel verwijst naar de laatmiddeleeuwse getijdenboeken), maar zijn anderzijds verrassend modern door de haast filmische dynamiek. Het verhaal bruist van vitaliteit en de kunstenaar zet een beeld neer van zichzelf als levensgenieter, wereldverbeteraar, idealist en anarchist. Voor Masereel was het wellicht een manier om de beklemmende oorlogsjaren van zich af te schudden. Het sloot perfect aan bij de opgewekte, optimistische jaren 1920 die in het verschiet lagen.
L'importance artistique et sociale de Frans Masereel se situe principalement pendant et entre les deux guerres mondiales. En raison de son pacifisme constant, il a séjourné en tant que réfugié politique dans la ville neutre de Genève de 1914 à 1918. Dans ses gravures sur bois, il commente la guerre et travaille de plus en plus avec des lignes nettes et des surfaces expressives en noir et blanc. Dans Mon livre d'heures, son premier roman graphique de 1918-1919, il montre une autre facette de lui-même, plus optimiste. D'une part, les 167 gravures sur bois renvoient à une technique et à un concept séculaires (le titre fait référence aux livres d'heures de la fin du Moyen Âge), mais d'autre part, elles sont étonnamment modernes en raison de leur dynamisme presque cinématographique. L'histoire déborde de vitalité et l'artiste se dépeint comme un bon vivant, un bienfaiteur, un idéaliste et un anarchiste. Pour Masereel, c'était probablement une façon de se débarrasser de l'oppression des années de guerre. Il s'intégrait parfaitement dans les joyeuses et optimistes années 1920 qui s'annonçaient.
The artistic and social significance of Frans Masereel is mainly situated during and between the two World Wars. Because of his consistent pacifism he stayed as a political refugee in neutral Geneva from 1914 to 1918. In his woodcuts, he commented on the war and increasingly worked with sharp lines and expressive black and white surfaces. In Mon livre d'heures, his first graphic novel from 1918-1919, he shows another, more optimistic side of himself. On the one hand, the 167 woodcuts hark back to an age-old technique and concept (the title refers to the late-medieval books of hours), but on the other hand, they are surprisingly modern because of their almost filmic dynamism. The story is brimming with vitality and the artist portrays himself as a bon vivant, a do-gooder, an idealist and anarchist. For Masereel it was probably a way of shaking off the oppressive war years. It fitted in perfectly with the cheerful, optimistic 1920s that lay ahead.
