- Rond 1850 maakte Gustave Courbet ophef met controversiële schilderijen van boeren en arbeiders op het formaat van monumentale historiestukken, waarin hij zijn politieke en sociale standpunten accentueerde. Daarnaast was hij echter als landschapschilder actief, vooral op het einde van de jaren 1850 en in de jaren 1860. De Franche-Comté, zijn geboortestreek, genoot daarbij zijn voorkeur, en hij schilderde vaak de rivier de Loue en de grot waar zij ontspringt. Uit De rotsen van de Loue blijkt Courbets voorkeur voor een donkere en ruige natuur. Om deze ruwheid te benadrukken en de tastbaarheid van de natuurelementen te suggereren maakte de kunstenaar gebruik van het paletmes. De verf bracht hij in dikke en zware lagen aan. Uit Courbets’ diepdonkere kleurgebruik blijkt ook zijn voorliefde voor Hollandse en Spaanse schilders als Rembrandt en Velazquez.
