Description:

Tijdens de Eerste Wereloorlog vluchtte Edgard Tytgat naar Engeland. Daar legde hij zich toe op grafisch werk. Met gekleurde hout- of linosneden illustreerde hij het sprookje van Roodkapje en andere verhalen. Ook na de oorlog behield Tytgat een voorkeur voor verhalende, vaak humoristische taferelen, in een vaak primitieve en volkse schilderwijze. Hier zien we een boot met kinderen die aanmeert bij een paradijselijk eiland waar Sint-Niklaas hen opwacht. De afbeelding op het zeil van de boot verwijst naar de passage in de Bijbel waar Christus zegt: ‘Laat de kinderen tot mij komen’. In de ommuurde tuin van het eiland beeldde de kunstenaar zichzelf af te midden van spelende kinderen. In datzelfde jaar maakte Tytgat een houtsnede met dezelfde voorstelling.
