- Tijdens Wereldoorlog I bevindt Vantongerloo zich in Nederland. Vóór zijn contacten met De Stijl was hij beïnvloed door Rik Wouters en Jules Schmalzigaug. In zijn ‘Zelfportret’ bracht hij de verf in korte veegjes aan maar niet overal op het doek waardoor het linnen van het doek doorschemert. Het geheel krijgt daardoor een dynamisch en vooral kleurrijk uitzicht.
