Description:: Vanaf de jaren 1850 verbleef César De Cock geregeld in Frankrijk. Daar ontdekte hij de plein air schilderkunst van de School van Barbizon, die hem diepgaand beïnvloedde. De Cock stond trouwens op vriendschappelijke voet met enkele van deze schilders. Zijn oeuvre bestaat overwegend uit poëtische lentelandschappen, geschilderd in een ingehouden koloriet. Het Leielandschap of De weg naar het Patijntje in Gent uit 1863 is daarvan een mooi voorbeeld. In die tijd was het Patijntje een druk bezochte, landelijke herberg aan de rand van de stad.
