- Description:
- Zoals veel Scandinavische kunstenaars reisde Hugo Frederik Salmson in het begin van zijn carrière naar Parijs om er verder te studeren. In de late jaren 1870 werd hij een gevierd kunstenaar op de Parijse salon. Zijn geïdealiseerde, ietwat theatrale schilderijen vertederden zijn tijdgenoten. Het landelijke leven in Picardië en ook in Skane in Zuid-Zweden, waar hij vanaf 1883 de zomer doorbracht, staat er centraal. Het bezoek bij de pachtster is waarschijnlijk in deze regio te situeren en verbeeldt vier keuvelende plattelandsvrouwen, gezeten rond een lange, massieve boerentafel. Uit het doek straalt een harmonieuze rust, voor Salmson een weerspiegeling van het idyllische platteland.
