- Het thema van De aanbidding door de koningen (of de wijzen) is afgeleid uit het evangelie van Matteüs. De voorstelling van de wijzen als koningen is echter een latere ontwikkeling in de christelijke overlevering en sinds de twaalfde eeuw algemeen verspreid. De geschenken die de wijzen aanbieden hebben een symbolische betekenis: goud verwijst naar het koningschap van Christus, mirre naar zijn menselijke en wierook naar zijn goddelijke natuur.De Meester van de prelaat Mur behoort tot de Aragonese school en was actief rond het middenvan de vijftiende eeuw. Het gebruik van goud in reliëf, zo kenmerkend voor de oudere Spaanse paneelschilderkunst, is hier beperkt tot de bekers die de wijzen komen aanbieden en tot enkele siermotieven in de kledij.
