Description:

De Calvarieberg van Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostzanen, genaamd van Amsterdam, is afkomstig uit het dominicaner klooster in Gent. Het was vermoedelijk het middenpaneel van een triptiek. Een bosrijk landschap met een stad in de verte vormt het decor voor de bewening van Christus aan het kruis. In de diepte verdwijnen de laatste ruiters. Bij de gekruisigde zijn enkel zijn moeder Maria, Johannes en drie heilige vrouwen achtergebleven. Maria Magdalena omarmt het kruis. Voor haar staat de zalfpot, waarmee ze vaak wordt afgebeeld. Haar kleed, rijkelijk versierd met goudbrokaat, is weelderig gedrapeerd. Het paneel is een voorbeeld van laatgotische stijl waarin decoratieve elementen overwegen op de innerlijke bewogenheid van de figuren. Opmerkelijk is ook het ruimtegevoel dat de kunstenaar wist te creëren en de uitgebalanceerde ritmiek in de compositie.
