- Adriaen van de Venne specialiseerde zich in onderwerpen uit de literatuur. Zijn monochrome schilderijen stonden bekend als grisailles of ‘grauwtjes’. In dit schilderij verduidelijkte hij het moralistische thema door de titel in een banderol neer te schrijven. ‘Goet-gelach’ betekent zowel hartelijk lachen als vrolijk vertier (gelag). Dergelijke volkse scènes waren voor tijdgenoten een duidelijke verwijzing naar menselijke ondeugden.
