Description:

De aanbidding door de Wijzen wordt toegeschreven aan een anonieme meester die in het begin van de zestiende eeuw in Antwerpen werkzaam was. De noodnaam Pseudo-Blesius is afgeleid van Henricus Blesius met wie hij aanvankelijk werd verward. De kunstenaar plaatste de aanbidding in een grillig landschap met op de voorgrond een ruïne. Een klein cirkelvormig reliëf boven een raam in de bouwval stelt koning David met zijn harp voor. Als voorvader van Jezus vertegenwoordigt hij het Oude Testament, een periode die door de geboorte van Christus is afgesloten: de ruïne waarop de nieuwe kerk wordt gebouwd, verbeeldt het Oude Testament. De extreme uitrekking van de figuren en de overdadige detaillering in kledij, architectuur en landschap zijn karakteristiek voor het Antwerps maniërisme. Deze laatgotische stijl kende in het begin van de zestiende eeuw een ruime verspreiding in de Nederlanden, Duitsland en het noorden van Frankrijk. Ook het oeuvre van Cornelis Engebrechtsz. van Leyden en Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostzanen, twee Hollandse meesters in de museumverzameling, sluit nauw aan bij het Antwerps maniërisme.
