- De allegorie van de nacht is geïnspireerd op de Griekse mythologie waarin de Nacht voorgesteld wordt als een gesluierde vrouw. Zij is de moeder van een tweeling, de Slaap en de Dood, hier weergegeven door twee naakte kinderen. Mogelijk zinspeelde Léon Frédéric ook op een andere traditie in de West-Europese kunst. De slapende kinderen verbeelden dan de Ochtend en de Avond, nog niet gewekt uit de intense verbondenheid met hun moeder, de Nacht. Frédéric wist hier zijn belangstelling voor de weergave van droombeelden te verbinden met de kunst van de door hem zo bewonderde Italiaanse renaissance. Zowel de scherpte van de uitvoering als het raffinement waarmee hij de transparante stoffen schilderde, herinneren aan schilderijen van Botticelli, wiens werk hij leerde kennen op zijn studiereizen naar Italië.
