- Op twintigjarige leeftijd trok Henri-Joseph Lebasque naar Parijs waar hij vrij snel onder de invloed kwam van het impressionisme. In zijn werk staat doorgaans zijn directe omgeving centraal. In het Diabolospel wordt deze met een rustige en intieme sfeer geassocieerd. Op de voorgrond posteerde Lebasque een meisje dat opgaat in haar spel. Achteraan in de tuin zit een vrouw met een breiwerkje. Typisch voor Lebasque is het heldere, bijna fauvistische kleurgebruik en de eenvoudige compositie, waarin een strakke lijnvoering samengaat met de suggestie van beweging.
