- Charles De Groux schilderde bij voorkeur het harde leven van boeren en arbeiders. Zijn sociaal geïnspireerd realisme is vaak religieus getint, zoals in Gebed voor het eten en Viaticum (De laatste sacramenten). Van beide werken maakte De Groux verscheidene versies. De melancholie en de uitdrukking van De Groux’ empathie met de verdrukten maakten op Vincent van Gogh een diepe indruk. De Nederlandse schilder baseerde zijn Aardappeleters uit 1885 rechtstreeks op De Groux’ Gebed voor het eten.
