- Voor de Gentse beeldhouwer en graveur Jozef Cantré waren George Minne en Constant Meunier aanvankelijk zijn meest directe voorbeelden. Van 1918 tot 1930 verbleef hij in Nederland (Blaricum en Oosterwijk). Hij werkte er in ‘taille directe’, rechtstreeks in hout of steen, in een constructief expressionistische stijl die de invloed van Zadkine verraadt. In 1930 keerde Cantré naar België terug en vestigde zich in de buurt van Gent. Onder invloed van de algemene neorealistische tendens in de jaren voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog, evolueerde hij naar een synthese tussen geometrische vereenvoudiging en dynamisch realisme. Vaardige vrouw is een opmerkelijk voorbeeld waarin de kunstenaar de stroefheid van een beredeneerde geometrische constructie wist te verbinden met de uitdrukking van vitalisme en beweging.
