- Description:
- Pieter Jan van Reysschoot was de eerste schilder van een kunstenaarsfamilie die vijf generaties lang de artistieke bedrijvigheid in Gent zou domineren. Hij verbleef een groot deel van zijn leven in Engeland. Daaraan dankt hij zijn bijnaam ‘de Engelsman’. Hij schilderde bij voorkeur historische taferelen en portretten van de kleine provinciale, Engelse adel. The Meet (De samenkomst voor de jacht) en The Kill (Het doden van het hert) behoren tot zijn beste werken. Het zijn zogenaamde ‘sporting conversation pieces’, voorstellingen van sportieve bijeenkomsten te paard. Dit genre, een oorspronkelijke schepping van de Antwerpse schilder Peter Tillemans, is vooral in Engeland bijzonder populair in de achttiende eeuw. Van Reysschoot schilderde The Meet en The Kill voor Sir John Frederick van Southwick Park in Hampshire. Ze tonen de kasteelheer met zijn gezelschap tijdens een jachtpartij in zijn domein Hascombe in Surrey.
