- Description:
- Het volkse leven in Oostende nam Ensor herhaaldelijk tot onderwerp in schilderijen, tekeningen en etsen. Het leven in de havenstad intrigeerde hem, en in zijn werk sympathiseerde de kunstenaar openlijk met de armen, daklozen en zwervers, die in Oostende door de plaatselijke overheid zo veel mogelijk aan het oog van het toeristenpubliek werden onttrokken. Verschillende prenten getuigen van Ensors sympathie voor deze paria’s van de maatschappij: “Zieke luizenbos bij de kachel”, “De putruimer”, “Het gevecht” en “De vechtersbazen” (respectievelijk inv. 1998-B-91 / -B-106 / -B-107 / -B-108).
