- Het volkse leven in Oostende nam Ensor herhaaldelijk tot onderwerp van schilderijen, tekeningen en etsen. Deze prent gaat waarschijnlijk terug op een tekening die Ensor in de vroege jaren 1880 maakte. De thematiek intrigeerde in deze periode ook Willy Finch, Ensors Oostendse jeugdvriend. De tweede staat van deze prent werd in 1910 gepubliceerd in het album van de Antwerpse kunstenaarsvereniging Kunst van Heden.
