- Deze ets illustreert het derde deel van Christus' bekoring door de duivel. De duivel neemt Christus mee naar een hoge berg om hem alle koninkrijken van de wereld te tonen. In een klad van een brief bracht Ensor dit tafereel ter sprake (Antwerpen, Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, inv. 2712/219 r°). Hij schrijft dat hij aan verschillende composities werkt, onder meer aan "De bekoring van Christus", waarvan hij reeds een pentekening had gemaakt: "De duivel toont met een breed gebaar een uitgestrekt landschap bezaaid met monumenten, piramiden, gotische kerken, Griekse tempels, pagoden ... het Justitiepaleis en het stadhuis van Brussel. De schaduw van de duivel bedekt voor een gedeelte dit landschap." Ensor inspireerde zich misschien op de verwante prent "Le Tentateur" van Honoré Daumier, die de Fransman in 1851 in Le Charivari publiceerde.
