- Als etser naar de natuur was Ensor vooral geboeid door de weergave van het licht in de bossen en in de poldervlakte. Hij etste met kleine, nerveuze trekken, die trillen van spanning. Zijn landschappen worden gekenmerkt door een beheerste, spaarzame schriftuur, waardoor ze een suggestieve kracht krijgen. Om het dramatische effect van de luchtpartij in "Het onweer” te bereiken liet Ensor de koperplaat inbijten met zwavelzuur.
