Description:

De thematiek van Maria Magdalena duikt reeds in de 11de eeuw in de beeldende kunst op. Deze lange beeldende traditie verwerkte Ensor in de hem eigen typologie. Zoals wel vaker het geval was, herwerkte hij een vrouwenfiguur die (waarschijnlijk) in oorsprong naar model was getekend. Enkele attributen verwijzen naar Maria Magdalena: de schedel links onderaan en het kruis in haar handen. De doodssymboliek sluit aan bij de traditionele iconografische interpretaties van de boetende Magdalena-figuur. In Ensors werk had de schedel een uitgesproken morbide, ironische dan wel fantastische connotatie.
