- Het motief van het levende skelet staat sinds de middeleeuwen symbool voor de dood. Ensor gebruikte deze voorstellingswijze herhaaldelijk in zijn schilderijen en tekeningen. In zijn grafische oeuvre overheerst het skeletmotief in prenten zoals Geraamten die zich willen warmen en De dood vervolgt de mensenkudde (inv. 1998-B-104).
