Description:
De tekening "Koning Pest" is gebaseerd op een verhaal van Edgar Allen Poe, getiteld "King Pest, a tale containing an allegory". Het verhaal gaat over twee zeemannen die een herberg verlaten zonder te betalen en daardoor worden nagezeten door de boze waardin. Tijdens hun vlucht komen ze terecht in een Londense wijk waar ze belanden in een kelder waar Koning Pest een vergadering voorzit. In 1895 graveerde Ensor een ets naar de tekening, die rond 1886-88 ontstond (inv. 1998-B-100).
