Description:
De literaire werken die Félicien Rops illustreerde, vormen een waar pantheon van de symbolistische literatuur. De kunstenaar maakte illustraties voor teksten van onder meer Charles Baudelaire, Stéphane Mallarmé en Paul Verlaine, en zijn Belgische vriend Théo Hannon. Voor de gedichtenbundel Les Epaves van Baudelaire verzorgde Rops in 1866 het frontispice. Het centrale motief van de compositie is de levensboom die gevoed wordt door de zeven hoofdzonden. Met deze voorstelling introduceerde de kunstenaar het thema van het skelet in zijn oeuvre.
