Description:
Maerten de Vos wordt beschouwd als de voorloper van de Antwerpse barokschool. Van zijn hand zijn zowel talrijke portretten als monumentale religieuze en historische taferelen gekend. De familie van de heilige Anna vervaardigt hij in 1585. De legende over het leven van de heilige Anna ontstond in de 13de eeuw. Volgens die legende huwde Anna driemaal. Uit elk huwelijk had ze een dochter. Zij was al een oudere vrouw toen zij het leven schonk aan Maria, de moeder van Christus. Op het schilderij zit Maria in het midden met het Kind op haar schoot. Naast haar zit haar nicht Elisabeth en niet, zoals gebruikelijk, haar moeder, de heilige Anna. Voor Elisabeth staat haar zoon Johannes de Doper. In het bejaarde echtpaar rechts van de arcade herkennen we Anna en haar derde man Joachim samen met hun dochter Maria. Vooraan links en rechts zitten de halfzussen van Maria. Achteraan zien we van links naar rechts Zebedeus, Zacharias en Jozef, de echtgenoten van Maria’s halfzus, van Elisabeth en van Maria. Een doorzicht in de architectuur toont het tafereel van de ontmoeting tussen Maria en Elisabeth.
