Description:

In 1588 bestelde de Gentse stadsmagistraat voor de schepenkamer van de Keure van het Gentse stadhuis het Laatste Oordeel bij Rafaël Coxie. Het paneel moest Het Laatste Oordeel van Cornelis van der Goes vervangen, een laat vijftiende-eeuws werk dat tijdens de beeldenstorm verloren was gegaan. In de schepenkamer werd recht gesproken en het was traditie om er gerechtigheidstaferelen op te hangen. Die moesten rechters en beklaagden herinneren aan het ultieme oordeel van God. De voorstelling van Coxie is vrij traditioneel. Christus is gezeten op een wolk en omgeven door heiligen en engelen, beneden links knielen de gelukzaligen, rechts worden de verdoemden door saters en monsters meegesleurd naar de hel. De levensgrote naakten onderaan links op het paneel herinneren aan Michelangelo, het deel dat zich in de hemel afspeelt doet aan Raphaël denken. Rafaël Coxie’s vader, de schilder Michiel Coxie had een grote bewondering voor deze renaissancemeester; Rafaël dankt zijn voornaam aan de Italiaanse schilder. Vader en zoon Coxie zijn exponenten van de Italianiserende richting in de Vlaamse schilderkunst van de zestiende eeuw.
