- In Delft legden enkele schilders zich speciaal toe op het weergeven van kerkinterieurs. In hun werk ging het meer om de sfeer dan om een correcte behandeling van verhoudingen en perspectief. Hun voorstellingen waren gebaseerd op bekende kerkgebouwen waarvan de interieurs gemanipuleerd werden. Bij Hendrik van Vliet gaat het vooreerst om de monumentaliteit van de imaginaire architectuur. Maar ook het verhalende is belangrijk. Mensen wandelen in de kerk, één is zelfs vergezeld van zijn hondje
