Description:
Marinus van Reymerswale is afkomstig uit het gelijknamige stadje Reimerswaal in Zeeland. Na zijn studies aan de universiteit van Leuven volgt hij een schildersopleiding in Antwerpen. Zijn schilderstijl valt op door de spitse, bewogen lijnvoering, de maniëristische verlenging van de figuren en de zakelijkheid waarmee hij voorwerpen vormgeeft. Al deze kenmerken vinden we terug in De roeping van de heilige Matteüs. Het thema rond de tollenaar die apostel wordt, is bijzonder geliefd bij zijn tijdgenoten. Het geeft de schilder de kans om een interessante compositie uit te werken waarbij we kennismaken met het interieur van toenmalige ontvangstkantoren met veel rekeningen, notulen en papierrollen.
