Description:

Kort na zijn dood wordt Franciscus van Assisi een legendarische figuur. Niet alleen in Italië, maar ook boven de Alpen is het verhaal van zijn stigmatisatie bijzonder populair. In 1224, twee jaar voor zijn dood, krijgt Franciscus een visioen op de berg La Verna nabij Arezzo, waar hij zich met broeder Leo had teruggetrokken. De gekruisigde Christus verscheen aan hem als een serafijn met zes vleugels. Op dat moment ontving hij de vijf wonden van Christus, die hij tot zijn dood zou behouden. Het doodshoofd en het geopende gebedenboek, rechts onder op het schilderij, verwijzen naar het leven van meditatie en onthechting waarvoor Franciscus had gekozen. Peter Paul Rubens maakte verscheidene versies van dit thema. Hier is de heilige in vooraanzicht afgebeeld, met zijn blik gericht op de toeschouwer. Het beeld van zijn door verwarring en pijn bewogen gelaat verhoogt de dramatiek van het gebeuren, een voorstelling die typisch is voor de late Rubens. Ook de zachte, in elkaar vloeiende grijstonen kenmerken het late oeuvre van de kunstenaar. Het altaarstuk sierde vroeger een zijaltaar in de thans verdwenen recollectenkerk in Gent.
