- Vanaf oktober 1951 moest Permeke vaak het bed houden. Tinus Van Bakel en zijn dochter Truus, in gezelschap van de familie, waakten dagen en nachten bij zijn bed. Uiteindelijk werd hij in allerijl overgebracht naar de Heilige Hartkliniek in Oostende. Daar stierf hij op vrijdag 4 januari om 19 uur. Diezelfde dag had hij nog aan zijn zoon Paul gevraagd welke dag het was, want hij wilde weten op welke dag hij zou sterven, zo zei hij. Het lichaam van Permeke werd opgebaard in het huis De Vier Winden. De volgende dinsdag 8 januari 1952 werd Permeke begraven naast zijn vrouw Marietje op het kerkhof van de gemeente Jabbeke.
