- De bedelaar behoort samen met Boer met schop en De zaaier tot een reeks van drie landelijke figuren die Permeke begin jaren dertig realiseerde. Permeke isoleerde de figuren uit hun dagelijkse omgeving. Ze beheersen het hele vlak. Bepaalde delen van het lichaam zijn sterk benadrukt, zoals handen, voeten en ogen, door ze uit te vergroten en te vervormen. De monumentaliteit van deze figuren kondigt het latere beeldhouwwerk van Permeke aan.
