- Joostens liep tussen 1916-1925 voorop in de tendens naar meer abstractie in Antwerpen. Toch zou hij nooit een zuiver abstract beeld afleveren. Opstaan en ondergang van het leven toont een opwaartse en neerwaartse kolkbeweging die de cyclus van het leven symboliseert. Achteraan zien we een toren, een verbrandingstoren? De titel bepaalt in grote mate een figuratieve lezing.
