- Deze ets behoort tot een reeks van acht etsen met als titel: De hoofdzonden. Naast de zeven hoofdzonden is er nog een achtste prent. Een soort frontispice waarop de personificaties van de zonden onder de vleugels van de dood zijn voorgesteld (SM001465(a) en (b)). De ets 'De afgunst' toont een huisgezin, stralend van geluk, te midden van een groep afgunstige personen.
